Dear Brother: Your letter of Nov 26 sent by way of the Regt I read a few days since[.] I believe I have not acknowledged the receipt of yours of Dec 1st and will answer them now. Well Frank although I could hardly help laughing when I read that history of yours yet I do really feel sorry that you have had so much trouble about getting your house done off and hope that the tide of fortune will sometime be in your favor “Misfortunes never come singly” and perhaps that fortunes may come in the same way by all events by and look on the bright side of things. The sun is always shining somewhere you see I am still in the hospital. I think I am improving slowly but have to be extremely careful of myself. That long march was about as much as I could endure. [A]nd it will take a long time to fully get over its effects[.] Still I do not think that my constitution is infurred. If I was at home I should get along faster though I have good care and attention here and am quite happily disappointed in regards to hospitals which I had always had a dread of before I came here. I suppose that Philander is now enjoying married life and I am anxiously looking for a letter from home giving an account of the wedding te.te. I[t] seems queer to think of Philander bringing a wife home to live with him. The hospitals are now very rapidly filling up[.] There are upwards of 20 in the city[.] I understand that they contain about 14000 soldiers. There is an immense army in this part of the state under gen Rosencran’s command[.] A great battle is expected soon somewhere in this vicinity. I wish when you write next you would send me a small calander one in an Almanac I presume. I wish Carrie could find time to write too[.] Love to her and the little ones. Prices continue to be extradordinally high here. The R.R. is kept busy supplying the army and often provisions cannot be supplied[.] Flour is $16.00 per barrel Butter 50 to 75 cents per lb and cheese 25 to 40. Eggs 75 cents a doz[.] Large apples 2 for 25 cents. Medium sized 3 for the same price and all other things in proportion. I guess I will write some on the other page to Mother.
