Official and First Person Accounts of the
Historic 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry

John Avery, Surgeon of the 21st Michigan wrote about his war time experiences in the article "From Murfreesboro to Chickamauga and Libby Prison." This is an exciting account of his war time experiences.

The 21st Michigan on the March comes from entries found at the National Archive in the remarks of the Company F muster rolls. This document contains a detailed movement summary for the 21st from their September 1862 departure from Ionia to their camp just outside Murfreesboro on January 6, 1863.

Several sources are available to obtain a condensed history of the 21st Michigan.

A condensed history of the 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment by current Reenactor member Ron Webb. This is a very short accounting of engagements and campaigns the 21st participated in.

A longer history, including numerous period quotes, taken from "Michigan In the War," compiled by John Robertson, Adjutant General; W. S. George & Co., Lansing, 1882; pp. 412-419

Brig. Gen. George H. Brown, Adjutant General of Michigan directed the publication of histories for all Michigan units that served in the war. This resulted in the creation of a 46 volume set These volumes commonly called "Record of service of Michigan volunteers in the Civil War, 1861-1865" are also known as "The Michigan Brown Books." Each volume of the series covers a Michigan unit. Volume 21 covers the 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
