Official
and First Person Accounts of the John Avery, Surgeon of the 21st Michigan wrote about his war time experiences in the article "From Murfreesboro to Chickamauga and Libby Prison." This is an exciting account of his war time experiences. The 21st Michigan on the March comes from entries found at the National Archive in the remarks of the Company F muster rolls. This document contains a detailed movement summary for the 21st from their September 1862 departure from Ionia to their camp just outside Murfreesboro on January 6, 1863. Read the letters of First Lieutent Charles S. Brown who served as Adjutant of the 21st Michigan. Several sources are available to obtain a condensed history of the 21st Michigan.
