MODERN
HISTORY OF THE 21ST MICHIGAN
REENACTOR & LIVING HISOTRY GROUP
The 21st Michigan Volunteer
Infantry, Co. H is a Civil War reenacting regiment found in 1979 by active
member Lowell White and several others. Lowell and the others wanted to create
a more authentic impression of Civil War soldiers than they had been portraying
when forming-up other regiments at events.
They also wanted to belong to a home based regiment, one they could identify
with, so they researched the history of Michigan regiments and chose the 21st
Michigan in August 1979. The 21st Michigan was a "western" theater regiment.
This was important to them because they felt that although much of the heaviest
fighting was done in the east, the war was won in the west.
The 21st Michigan has participated in reenacting events at Saylors
Creek, Gettysburg, Antietam, Perryville, Chickamauga, Shiloh, Cedar Mountain
and the Battle of the Wilderness. In the state of Michigan we participate at
the Greenfield Village Civil War Remembrance, Cascades Park at Jackson, Charleton
Park at Hastings and many local reenactments, parades and living history events.
In October 2000, we took part in the rededication of the monument to the 21st
Michigan at Ionia, Michigan where the original regiment was formed, inducted
and trained before leaving for the war in the south in 1862.
