Foglesong, George W. [photo] Pvt., enlisted February 12, 1864, at age 22, in Co. K, 21st Michigan Infantry Regiment, Second Division, 14th Army Corps. His Regiment was detached and assigned to the Engineer Corps. They built a bridge across the Tennessee River and constructed the barracks on Lookout Mountain. They were placed in the field and were engaged in the battle against Hood at Nashville and also at the battle of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and other minor engagements. He was discharged at Washington, DC, in July 1865. George was an active member of the Heald Post No. 253, Department of Michigan, Grand Army of the Republic.

Wounded (three wounds) at Williamsburg, Va., May 5 1862. Lt. Col. 21st Inf., Nov. 20, 1862. Colonel, Feb. 3, 1863. Wounded three times and taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Ga., Sept. 20, 1863. Escaped from Libby prison Feb. 9, 1864. Resigned on account of wounds, Sept. 14, 1864, and honorably discharged. In General Thomas's order is the following: "On account of wounds (six in number) received at various times in action while in discharge of duty, the honorable scars of which he now wears. In accepting the resignation of Col. William B. McCreery, the major general commanding takes occasion to express his high appreciation of the soldierly qualities and faithful discharge of duty which has ever characterized Col. McCreery's actions, at the same time regretting the existence of the disability which compels the withdrawal of so valuable an officer from the service."
