Civil War Color Company

A brief overview of Color Companies during the Civil War.

All Civil War Infantry Regiment's formed a Color Company or a Color Guard, whose assignment was to carry (bear) the National Colors into battle and protect them. It was consided a high honor to be selected as a member of the Color Guard. Each member of the Color Guard was selected for this position based on his courage and steadiness under fire, by the Regimental Commander. The flags were carried by unarmed color sergeants, and accompanied by armed color corporals, who were instructed not to engage in combat unless the flags were in immediate danger of capture, The flags became the symbol of a unit's pride and courage, a rallying point in combat and the source of many heroic deeds in their defense.
