William Emra Thornton Company B, 21st Michigan V.I. Photograph of Mr. Thornton A letter written by him to Brigadier General William Denison Whipple, Assistant Adjutant General of the Army of the Cumberland in September 1864 requesting leave from the 21st Michigan to visit his ailing mother back in Michigan. Special Order Number 8, releasing Sergeant Thornton from his enlistment to enable him to accept an appointment as a Commissioned Officer in the Volunteer Services.
