HISTORIC
FORT WAYNE, Detroit
Saturday
April 20-22
First
Call for the 21st Michigan - 6:45
SCHOOL OF THE COMPANY & STREET FIRING
Wear your uniforms, shoulder your muskets & ask
your pards to join you for this drill session conducted
by Company K, 5th Michigan Infantry. We will form one
large company
Most
of the regiments from Michigan went through Fort Wayne
as they went off to war. It is a Vauban star fort built
in the 1840s. There are only six left of this type in
the nation. Check out this website www.historicfortwaynecoalition.us |
Macomb Community College Event
March 29 2008
We will be inside the Cultural Center at Hall Road and
Garfield. We are to park in the lot right across from the Cultural Center/Center for the Performing Arts and should arrive
between 9 and 9:30am to be ready by 10. I asked about firing the muskets and setting up tents and she said that for this
year we wouldn't be permitted to do either since we'll be inside, but it will be a potentially good recruiting event.
Groups will be coming and going as they please and asking questions as we go about drilling and doing whatever it is that
we do, so we should be prepared to answer questions of all sorts. Civilians are most definitely welcome, especially those
portraying specific roles. Also, as far as what we are to do for food, they have an incredible culinary program and that food
is available in their food court for purchase. There are also restaurants ranging from Coney Islands to fancy Italian Bistros
surrounding the campus. Then, of course there is always the option of brown bagging it, so the ball is completely in your
court as far as what you want to do for lunch.
The exhibit is active that day until 4pm and as I said before, it should be great for recruiting new members, soldiers and
civilians alike. I hope to see as many members of the 21st as possible attend and participate.

Set up is in Village Park, located at “the four corners” at 32 and Van Dyke (directly across from the“Romeo Observer” building – according to Mapquest, you can take the VanDyke Freeway to 32 Mile Rd then head west –
Romeo is a hop, skip, and a jump from the freeway), and would like us to be set up by 10:00 a.m. They ask that we not
break down camp until after 4.
We will be participating in a parade that begins around 1:00 and lasts about a half hour to

Please let me know ASAP whether or not you will be able to attend. Of course, walk-ons are always welcome, but I would

You should all be getting a package
from GFV. If you do not get one and it's a couple
weeks till the event starts please inform me ASAP.
Remember registration starts on Friday at 5:30 pm
till 8:00 pm. Check out March's newsletter for the
rest of the times and other info. I will be there
on Friday at 5:30 to set up the 21st camp. I can't do it
all by myself so if you can be there and help me
please let me know. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Hastings Event
At Charlton Park Village
July 19-20, 2008
Coordinator: Ray Berels
The organizers of this event are asking that all re-enactors who want to attend this event be pre-registered. As the event
coordinator, I will pre-register all 21st Michigan Members who want to attend. The event organizers are discouraging individual reenactor
registrations. If you register through me and I send in your name before the cut-off date (June 20, 2008), the
event is free. For all of those who are not registered by that date, the event will cost $10 per re-enactor. Therefore if
you want to attend this event, I need you to e-mail me the following information before June 6, 2008 (aka D-Day), so
that I will have enough time to complete and mail in the registration packet before June 20th. My e-mail address is:
rberels@comcast.net
The information I need is as follows:
1. Names of all who will be attending.
2. For the names listed in #1 above, is their impression military, medical, or civilian?
3. Does anyone in #1 above have a special medical condition? Please explain.
4. How many people will need straw?
5. Are you an authentic or modern camper? (Modern campsites are limited and will be handed out on a first come first serve
basis. They also require a separate form for registration. Let me know if you are interested in a modern campsite).
6. How many and what types of tents (wall, A-frame, dog) will you be setting up?
7. Are you interested in participating in the Lantern Tour on Saturday night?
Check-in and set-up will begin on Friday, July 18 from 8:00am until 12:00 midnight and again on Saturday, July 19 from
6:00am to 12 noon. As far as what you need to bring to this event, whatever you normally bring to the event at Jackson
should be what you bring to Hastings, which basically is everything. For more information about this event you can
check out the Charlton Park web site at http://www.charltonpark.org. Click on the Parks and Services drop down menu and
then click on Historic Charlton Park. There you can find more information about the park, check-in procedures,
conduct, safety, curfews, directions, etc. If you have any questions about this event you can e-mail me Remember, if you intend on participating in this event, I must have the information requested by
June 6, 2008.
Directions to the park are as follows: Take I96 west to Exit 97 and merge onto I69 South towards Charlotte. Take Exit 61
which is I69 Bus/Lansing Rd. toward Charlotte. Turn right at 27/69/Lansing Rd. Continue to follow 27/69. Continue on
W. Lawrence Ave. (M79). Turn right at M66/M79. Turn left at Fuller St/M79. Go to S. Charlton Park Rd. (583) and
turn right. After you cross over the Thornapple River, look for E. River Rd. where you will turn right. Continue on E.
River Rd. to the park entrance which will be on your right. Proceed to the Registration booth/tent. If you would like to
use Map Quest the address for the park is: 2545 S. Charlton Park Rd., Hastings, MI 49058, or you can use the map
and directions on the Charlton Park web site.
So if you want a huge dose of authenticity and you don’t want to drive 500 miles to Pennsylvania or Virginia to get it, try the
event at Hastings. I think you’ll like it!
